Yep! Those old four-wheel shoes or blades you haven’t strapped on since you were a kid, dig those out (or get some hot and sleek new ones!) and lace up! Roller-skating is one of my absolute favorite ways to exercise, whether it’s outside or at a roller disco! (Yes those things still exist) There are many benefits as well that you won’t even realize cause you’re too busy getting your groove on!
By utilizing so many muscles groups, especially in the legs you will also see many strength benefits, the friction of the wheels and constant engaging to push yourself forward is certainly a great way to supplement your resistance training and build up muscular strength and endurance! By adding hills (both up and down) you can make it more challenging, pushing up hill is a great way to add resistance as going downhill is great for control and stability.
One of the most beneficial aspects to roller-skating is core strength! Standing on 8 wheels is a lot different then just standing on two feet, your core is constantly at work keeping you balanced and sometimes it takes a few falls to get it right but you will always be engaged and working to keep yourself upright and prevent more falls.
Even just one hour of moderate roller-skating can great increase aerobic and muscular strength and endurance to help you burn fat and lose weight as well, it also keeps your core engaged throughout your entire bout. Going outside to a park on a nice day is always fun and a great way to get out and enjoy the day, even better if you can grab a friend.
Too cold to go outside? Check out a roller skating rink, many of them have adult nights or times, as well many clubs are now offering roller skating nights for adults, usually 21 and over. Dress up in a costume; grab some friends and lace up, roller skating is a great and fun activity to do with friends and a nice step outside of the norm.
Feeling competitive? Roller derby as well has become very popular, not just limited to the pros either there are many leagues and teams to check out for both men and women! Roller derby is a very fun and competitive sport that’s really putting a good workout on skates.
Adding roller skating to your exercise routine is a great way to really mix it up and add a spice and variety to your workout, it’ll keep your body challenging and engage your muscles in ways you may not have otherwise, this helps you burn more fat and increase your endurance. As well it is a lot of fun and a great way to get out and exercise, meet some new people and do something different to mix up old routine.
