I am one of those stereotypical millenials who never really got into reading. I have only read 2 novels all the way through in my life. I have made a proactive effort to learn more about the stories and journeys of those I look up too. Reading up on the autobiographies of many of my favorite Olympic athletes. Greg Louganis, Michael Phelps, Matthew Mitcham, Ian Thorpe to name a few. I figure the best way to find my journey to the Olympics is to learn from those who’ve been there.
My first real opportunity to experience what it might be like to be at the Olympic Games came in 2010 when I participated at the Gay Games in Cologne, Germany. With lavish opening ceremonies and athletes from all over the world, competing for such a big event was really amazing. Part of that experience was when I met my first Olympic Gold Medalist Matthew Mitcham and to hear a bit about his experience participating at the 2008 Olympic Games was exciting and helped validate my passion and goals.
As I continue to find my road, I look forward to discovering more about the journey and experience (or re-experience) the amazing moments that my favorite athletes have had on their journey.
