"My Journey with David"

When I discovered one day while shopping for a new pair of pants that I would have to visit the “Big and Tall” shop to get fitted I realized that my weight was out of control and beyond my ability to manage. I was determined to not get bigger pants. I told myself I just needed to eat less and do a little more exercise. For 8 or 9 years I had been going 3 times a week to the Fitness Center’s water aerobics class. I decided I should increase that to 5 times a week which I did. With minimal results. One day David substituted for the class instructor – and I fell in love. With his exercise style. And Speedo. I asked at the desk if they could make him the instructor. No, they said, but he has a class Monday and Wednesday evenings. I was there the following Monday and it was all over. I haven’t missed a class since. But it did not follow that those 7 hours a week was going to get the fat off which was going at about a pound a month. In addition, I had the misfortune of having my right knee give out on me due to arthritis, probably hastened by excess weight. I exercised harder and by November 2013 it was obvious that at that rate of weight loss, it would be two or three Christmases before I would be able to fit into smaller pants. 


I talked with David and he willingly accepted the challenge to help a fat old man lose weight. I went to David’s studio on November 21 and we have been working together every Tuesday and Thursday since. My weight loss has taken a dramatic turn for the better, the loss increasing from about a pound a month to a pound a week, and I am down two sizes in my pants waist. My current goal is to go below 200 pounds by the end of March, then 190 and finally 180. With David’s help I will make it. But weight loss is only a part of what David has changed in me. He is encouragement in the flesh, always supportive and expresses a lot of care for my well-being. He has constantly encouraged me to undertake new challenges not only in exercises but in social situations as well and develop in myself a positive attitude about trying things I did not think I could do. As age 84 approaches I believe I am in better physical and mental shape than I have been for several years, for which I credit David. I hope others will take advantage of his wonderful coaching style."

"Comfort Zones are something to get out of. My comfort zone with swimming had a lot more to do with some fears than my inability to swim. In order to move forward, I had to face these in a safe way and splash forward. I've known David Smith for a while and figured if anyone could get me back in the water ... actually swimming ... it would be him. We've just started, and it isn't pretty, but things are coming together .... one slightly uncoordinated dolphin kick at a time."

"Had a great time at bootcamp today. As much as I was excited bout it, I was a bit intimidated going into it as well. Although I spend a lot of time in the gym, I usually stay away from most things cardio because of bad asthma. I battle arthritis and and other medical conditions as well but, find it really important to find ways to push my body. Your class was challenging yet I felt comfortable enough to stop and take a breather when needed. I look forward to more Saturday bootcamps with you. Thanks!"
